How it unfolded.
The five-minute version
What actually happened.
The Exposition Universelle de 1889, better known in English as the 1889 Paris Exposition, was a world's fair held in Paris, France, from 6 May to 31 October 1889. It was one of several major expositions held in the city during this era, part of a tradition that saw Paris host world's fairs regularly throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It attracted more than thirty-two million visitors. The most famous structure created for the exposition, and still remaining, is the Eiffel Tower.
