In short
In 1884, Britain's Third Reform Act roughly doubled the electorate by extending the vote to working-class men in rural areas, mirroring the urban suffrage expansion of 1867. The act passed under Conservative Prime Minister Lord Salisbury but required a compromise: redistribution of parliamentary seats to prevent radical shifts in power. It marked the third major franchise expansion in 17 years and set the stage for 20th-century debates over universal suffrage.
