In short
Around 700 BCE, a sophisticated civilization emerged in what is now central Italy, speaking a non-Indo-European language and organizing themselves into independent city-states that traded across the Mediterranean. The Etruscans built on earlier settlements, eventually controlling territory stretching from Tuscany through parts of Umbria and Lazio-a power that would dominate the Italian peninsula before Rome's rise.
How it unfolded.
The five-minute version
What actually happened.
The Etruscans created a civilization in Etruria in ancient Italy, with a common language and culture, and formed a federation of city-states. After adjacent lands had been conquered, its territory covered, at its greatest extent, roughly what is now Tuscany, western Umbria and northern Lazio, as well as what are now the Po Valley, Emilia-Romagna, south-eastern Lombardy, southern Veneto and western Campania.
