How it unfolded.

The five-minute version

What actually happened.

The Indus is a transboundary river of Asia and a trans-Himalayan river of South and Central Asia. The 3,180 km (1,980 mi) river rises in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China where it is known as Sengge Zangbo, flows northwest through the disputed Kashmir region, first through the Indian-administered Ladakh, and then the Pakistani-administered Gilgit-Baltistan, bends sharply to the left after the Nanga Parbat massif, and flows south-by-southwest through Sindh province of Pakistan, before bifurcating and emptying into the Arabian Sea, its main stem located near the port city of Karachi.

Shocked
Not often has it been given to archaeologists to light upon the traces of a hitherto unknown civilization. Suddenly there looms up before us the image of a culture and a people new to history.
The Illustrated London News, 1926· Marshall presented findings to the international scholarly community, framing Indus civilization as a peer to known ancient powers.Sep 20, 1926
  • CelebratoryExpertJun 1924
We have unearthed evidence of a civilization as extensive and organized as Egypt or Mesopotamia, with cities of remarkable urban planning. The Indus Valley reveals a culture of which we knew nothing.
Archaeological Survey of India report, 1921-1924 - Following the 1920s rediscovery of Harappan seals and artifacts at Mohenjo-daro, Banerjee assessed the scale of the civilization.
  • SupportiveExpertJan 1938
The occupation layers span immense periods. This is no ephemeral settlement but evidence of a stable, coherent civilization sustained over many generations with consistent standards.
Further Excavations at Mohenjo-daro, 1938 - Mackay's detailed stratigraphic work revealed the civilization's temporal depth and cultural continuity across centuries.
  • SkepticalAnalystJun 1950
The Indus people possessed standardized weights, city grids, and apparent administrative order - yet their seals remain undeciphered. We are confronting the limits of what archaeology can reconstruct without written understanding.
Prehistoric India, 1950 - Piggott synthesized early findings for British academic audiences skeptical of a sophisticated pre-Vedic Indian civilization.
  • PredictiveDeveloperMar 1925
The precision of the brick dimensions, the sophistication of the sewage - these people engineered cities with standards we are only now learning to match. Who were they?
Synthesized from period excavation reports and correspondence - Harappa field notes, 1921-1925 - As lead excavator at Harappa, Sahni documented the practical realities of uncovering layer upon layer of planned streets and drainage systems.
