In short
On December 1, 1969, the U.S. Selective Service System held a lottery to determine the order in which young men would be drafted into the Vietnam War. Birth dates were randomly drawn from a drum, turning a person's chance of combat into a matter of pure chance. The drawing upended assumptions about fairness in military conscription and became a flashpoint for anti-war sentiment.
How it unfolded.
The five-minute version
What actually happened.
The Vietnam War Draft was a military draft implemented under the Selective Service System, drafting over 1.7 million men to serve in the Vietnam War. During the peacetime years before the Vietnam War, a draft existed, while many soldiers were joined on a voluntary basis. In the second half of 1965, with American troops entering Vietnam, there was a substantial expansion of the US armed forces, and this required a dramatic increase in the number of men drafted each month.

Impact
What followed.
The lottery made draft vulnerability visible and quantifiable in a way previous conscription had not. It fractured public support for the war by making the stakes personal and random rather than systemic, and galvanized draft resistance that would persist through the war's end.
